Is This The Worst Prison In The World?

Huddled together like cattle in a cage no bigger than a shed some of the men of El Salvador's prison pits have languished in these rancid, disease ridden holding cells for more than a year.

Designed only for temporary 72-hour stays, the sweltering cells, each 12 feet wide and 15 feet tall are crammed with more than 30 people - all veterans of the country's vicious war between the MS-13 and M18 gangs.

Segregated along tribal gang-lines, the men in these inhumane cells are hidden from public view, but one reporter from counter-culture magazine VICE, managed to gain access to throw light on the grizzly conditions they are consigned to spend their days living in.

Transport Secretary Michael Kamau says the government will ban night travel by Public Service Vehicles to reduce road accidents, hours after the death of 41 people in Narok.

The directive was communicated through the Twitter handle for the Ministry of Interior and Co-ordination of National Government.

In the communication, Kamau said the government will sue ‘City to City’ the bus company involved in the Narok Accident, because it didn’t have a valid Transport Licensing Board (TLB) certificate.
More than 33 people were hurt, according to local media reports.

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday warned that the government will take stern action against owners and drivers of Public Service Vehicles who flout traffic rules.

Speaking when he condoled with families of victims who died in the Mai Mahiu-Narok road accident, Kenyatta said drivers and owners of PSV must all take responsibility for their vehicles.
The bus was travelling from Nairobi to Homa Bay on the banks of Lake Victoria when it flew off the road, rolled over and plunged down a hill.

Thirty-three people were injured in the accident that occurred at around 1am at Ntulele and were hospitalised at the Narok District Hospital.
Kenyatta regretted that thousands of people continue to perish on the Kenyan roads due to recklessness and irresponsibility of drivers and the owners of the vehicles.
A bus carrying some 70 people crashed after the driver lost the control near the town of Ntulele early Thursday.

The Motorists Association in a statement asked for a ban on buses travelling at night until strict vetting is put in place to check the competence of drivers and also speed governors.

“To show seriousness of human life we call for a one month ban of passenger bus travelling at night just like in Tanzania until stringent vetting of drivers competence and fool proof governors are installed,” the association’s chairman Peter Murima said.

Flamini - I’ve unfinished business here

Mathieu Flamini says he has some “unfinished business” at Arsenal after returning to the Club this summer.

The France international spent four years with the Gunners from 2004 to 2008, during which time they reached the Champions League final and came close to winning the Premier League.

It's a great feeling to be back. Once you're a Gunner, you're always a Gunner Mathieu Flamini

The versatile midfielder is determined to make an impact during his second spell in north London - starting in Sunday’s derby against Tottenham.

“It feels good to be back home,” Flamini told Arsenal Player. “I have some unfinished business with Arsenal so it's a great feeling to be back. Once you're a Gunner, you're always a Gunner.

Unfinished business because we had the opportunity a few times when I was there to win trophies and we didn't. I'm thinking about the Champions League final, the 2007/08 season when we were in the running for the first place and we didn't close it.

“I feel good, I have been training for three weeks with the fitness coach, Tony Colbert. So I feel ready to start competing for Arsenal, especially on Sunday - it's going to be a big game.

“It’s a derby, everyone knows how important it is. We have to win it and we have to be ready for it.”

Arsenal yamsajili Mathieu Flamini

Arsenal can confirm that Mathieu Flamini has re-signed for the Club.

The 29-year-old Frenchman, who made 153 appearances for Arsenal from 2004 to 2008, rejoins the Club after five years in Serie A with AC Milan.

A tenacious and combative midfielder, Flamini was an integral part of the Arsenal team which reached the Champions League final in 2006 and also helped the Club win the FA Cup in 2005.

During the run to the Paris final in 2006, Flamini showed his versatility by playing as a left back for much of the campaign, becoming part of an Arsenal defence that racked up a record 10 consecutive clean sheets in the Champions League.

During his time in Milan, Flamini made 122 overall appearances for the Rossoneri, winning a Serie A title and the Supercoppa Italiana in 2011. He featured a total of 22 times for AC Milan last term.

Having come to the end of his contract with AC Milan at the end of last season, Flamini had been maintaining his fitness at London Colney this summer.

"We’re very pleased Mathieu has agreed to re-join us," Arsène Wenger said.

"He is a player of real quality, with a fantastic work rate and great mentality. As we know, Mathieu is a strong midfielder, but is also is comfortable playing in defence too. He is a very good addition to our squad."

Mathieu will wear the number 20 shirt at Arsenal.

Five members of a clan from Homa Bay, Migori County, are among those feared to have perished in the Ntulele accident that claimed 41 lives.

They were travelling to Homa Bay to attend funeral of their relative, who died last week and will be buried today.

Jared Okoth, 25, a member of the group who survived the accident and was admitted at Narok North District Hospital said he believed the rest of the team was killed since he could not trace them.

“I have gone round the hospital wards and even to the mortuary but I cannot trace any of them. There are no records in this hospital,” said Okoth, who comes from Sori area, Homa Bay. “They might be among those who were killed.” he added.

He sustained a fractured finger and facial injuries.

Okoth, who was writhing in pain but still determined to locate his relatives dead or alive, said the burial was supposed to have taken place Friday.

“We left Machakos Bus Station shortly after midnight for us to arrive early for burial preparation. We were seated in different locations in the bus. Hours after the accident, I cannot trace any of them. Though I’m happy to be alive, I’m still concerned about them,” narrated Okoth.

He said he was lucky that his sister, who was also in the bus survived.

“I’m sad, but also happy that my sister Mary Adhiambo, who suffered a fracture on her right arm survived,” he said while receiving numerous telephone calls from friends and relatives, who were making enquiries about the accident.

The accident occurred near Narok, 85 miles west of Nairobi. Deadly road accidents are common in Kenya, where highways lack safety features like guard rails or reflective paint.

The bus was travelling from Nairobi to Homa Bay on the banks of Lake Victoria when it flew off the road, rolled over and plunged down a hill.

"It is difficult to tell exactly what happened but all indications point to speeding and possibly overloading," he said. "It is quite disturbing."

Police also told the Standard newspaper that the driver may have fallen asleep.

Police and the Kenyan Red Cross said they had confirmed 41 deaths. At least 27 other passenger had suffered "multiple injuries".

Kimaru said police had "a difficult time recovering the bodies because this place is hilly and bushy".

"We've dozens others injured and we are not certain how many because they were taken to various hospitals... we have officers checking with the hospitals," Kimaru said.

He said it was unclear if the driver was dead or among the injured.

Kenyan roads are notoriously dangerous, with buses badly maintained and often overloaded so operators can maximise profits.

In February, 30 people died in a bus crash in the east of the country, and in July a school bus crash killed 20, most of them children.

Traffic regulations and fines were toughened late last year, although the local press continue to point at police corruption as a major problem.

Eto'o awasili London kujiunga na Chelsea

Samuel Eto'o arrived in London last night as he closes in on a move to Chelsea.

The 32-year-old was pictured at London St Pancras station with agent Pini Zahavi and is poised to undergo a medical after the Blues appeared to give up in their pursuit of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

Chelsea are keen to increase their attacking options, while Anzhi have been offloading players after owner Suleyman Kerimov decided to reduce his spending at the Dagestan club.
Former Barcelona star Eto'o flourished under Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho's guidance when the pair were at Inter Milan together.

Advisers for the Cameroon international held extensive talks with Chelsea yesterday and the player will sign on a free transfer from the Russian club.

Dog bless you

Lucky dog Charlie Annenberg
Philanthropist Charlie Annenberg and his golden retriever Lucky.
WHEN Charlie Annenberg adopted an abandoned golden retriever named Lucky, a new breed of philanthropy was born.

Lucky was four-years-old in 2001 when he teamed up with Mr Annenberg, scion to a US wealthy family known for donating their wealth.

The 46-year-old Mr Annenberg incorporated Lucky into all his projects. They were on the road more than they were home as they travelled around making documentaries about people who were making a difference.

Lucky became Mr Annenberg's sidekick and soul mate and would eventually inspire donations to dog-focused causes from the as much as $US8 million ($9 million) the philanthropist controls annually.

He and Lucky travelled to every installation in North America and everywhere they went, Mr Annenberg filmed Lucky interacting with people and places.

Pets Lucky Annenberg
Lucky gets some attention on a Hawaiian beach. Since his adoption, the lab has traveled the world, raising money for animal charities.

"It doesn't matter what color your skin, man or woman, fat or thin. He loves them all, every day. His name is Lucky and he's my friend.''

In 2010, Mr Annenberg decided to use his Lucky photos and films for a travel journal on Facebook, telling the story of their trips.

The Facebook page was all about Lucky, but it captured the fervour for pets that was growing around the country.

"Today we have an audience of 505,000 fans,'' said Courtney Johnson, explore.org's community relations manager.

Passion for the cause on Dog Bless You soared. Dogs cost between $US2000 and $US50,000 each, depending on how much training they need, Ms Johnson said.

The majority of the dogs funded by Mr Annenberg have been for veterans. Because there are waiting lists at almost every training school and experts say thousands of veterans would benefit from a dog, Mr Annenberg plans to accelerate the dog grant program.

Warrior Canine Connection in Brookeville, Maryland, is just one of the dog training schools Mr Annenberg uses, but it's also one of the most unique because dogs are raised for, by and with veterans.

The latest group of nine puppies is even named after veterans, said Warrior Canine executive director Rick Yount. Called the "honour litter,'' they are Bre, Luke, Gavin, Leigh Ann, Derek, Nick, Florence, Cody and Stanley.

"It's a good way to say, 'We are not forgetting about your sacrifices.' And they (the namesakes) get to spend time with the puppies and get therapy themselves,'' Mr Yount said.

Trained veterans teach the puppies for the first eight to 12 weeks. Then the dogs go live with volunteers from military or veteran's organisations.

"By the time a dog is fully trained, over 500 vets and service members have been involved in getting it ready,'' Mr Yount said.

Mr Annenberg misses Lucky at work.

"He was my partner on all these trips,'' he said. "It's not the same. He would open the door and make me look good. People always stopped and petted him. Everyone wanted to keep Lucky, especially the coal miners. Isn't it interesting that every day was a new day for Lucky? And he just wanted to be petted? It's been a great ride.''

WHEN plastic surgeon and bodybuilder Dr David Matlock turned up for work one day in 2007, little did he know he would be operating on a woman soon to become his wife.

After giving birth to a baby girl, the now 38-year-old Veronica sought the services of Dr Matlock for a vaginoplasty - what is now commonly known as 'designer vagina' surgery.

"I couldn't even look into his eyes because of the reason I was there," Veronica, who is now Dr Matlock's wife, told the Daily Mail.

"I was so shy and bashful, but he says it was love at first sight."

"I didn't see her weight then, I just knew what I wanted to do," said Dr Matlock, who after their first consultation suggested Veronica also undergo what he dubs a 'Wonder Woman Makeover' - liposuction of the chin, arms, and legs, and a Brazilian butt lift.

"She opted for everything I suggested. Even marriage" he said.

Indeed, Veronica and David became Mr and Mrs Matlock soon after, with the doctor proposing on their first date away from his surgery room.

Since then, Veronica has a vaginal rejuvenation, labiaplasty, a G-spot shot, liposuction and, most recently, Botox injections.

"I feel like I'm a walking advertisement for him," she told the Mail. "He keeps himself looking good, it's added pressure. So I feel like I have to look good, you know."

The "looking good" she's referring to is her husband's pioneering fat-implant technique called 'Vaser High Def Liposculpting', which he tests on himself.

The procedure involves injecting fat into different parts of the body to create a perfectly sculpted, muscular figure.

"I just wanted to take my body to a point where, with exercise and diet, you couldn't get it there," said Dr Matlock.

"I always eat healthy. A lot of my business is fat, doing liposuction all the time, but I don't like fat.

"We take out the fat under ultrasonic guidance and inject it into the muscles. I can sculpt out the biceps, the triceps, obliques, abs, calves, whatever."

Man charged for using Mugabe campaign poster as toilet paper

A Zimbabwean man has been charged for allegedly using President Robert Mugabe's election campaign poster as toilet paper, local media reported Wednesday.

Takura Mufumisi, 26, from the southern city of Masvingo, is said to have taken the paper with him to a bar toilet.

An informant reportedly spotted him tearing up the poster with Mugabe's image while inside the toilet and made a citizen's arrest.

"Public prosecutor Mukai Mutumbe told the court that on July 24 this year, Mufumisi entered Landmark bar in the city with the intention to relieve himself in the bar toilets," the paper reported.

He has been accused of violating electoral laws.

In Zimbabwe it is a crime to pull down election campaign posters.

His case has been adjourned indefinitely by a Magistrate's Court.

Ajikata mikono aache wizi

Egyptian man has sliced off both his hands by placing them in the path of a speeding train to overcome his stealing addiction.

Ali Afifi, 28, was apparently so appalled by his habitual crimes that he took his punishment into his own hands.
Mr Afifi said his stealing 'disease' started at a young age, first taking his friend's lunches at primary school.

It then escalated to items in shops and until recently he was taking people's mobile phones and gold jewellery

He said he used to give the money he made from the thefts to children and poor families.
But Mr Afifi was unable to cope with the guilt and decided to cut off his hands to put an end to his compulsive behaviour.

He said he wants to help his local town, improve the buildings and build a youth centre. He also wants to marry but doubts an Egyptian woman would take him because of his history of theft.

Wenger - I won't rotate on Tuesday night

Arsène Wenger
Arsène Wenger

Arsène Wenger says he will not rest players for Tuesday night's Champions League play-off against Fenerbahce.

Arsenal hold a healthy lead over the Turkish side going into the return leg after winning 3-0 in Istanbul last Wednesday, but Wenger insists that his team will not be taking their opposition lightly at Emirates Stadium.
"It will be stability in the team," he said. "Maybe one or two who are a bit injured [will be rested], but 95 per cent of the team who played at Fulham will play [on Tuesday] night.”

“It will show consistency and, therefore, I'm already focused today to go into this game with full commitment. For me, top-level sport is just about consistency.

“It says it all [that I won't rest players]. It shows how important it is to us. It's of course a very, very, very important tie for us.

"We want to be in the group stage the next day, and that demands attitude and commitment and desire to play the game with full power, like we love to do.”
