The King of the Sprints is undisputed. Usain Bolt ended the pretensions of mere mortals to his throne last night when he reduced his own world 100 metres record to rubble.

All those who wondered after last year’s sensational sprint at the Olympics how fast the Jamaican would go if he ever ran the length of a straight flat out have their answer — 9.58 seconds.

‘Today was perfect. This gave me a lot of energy, especially the crowd,’ said Bolt through the stadium microphone immediately after the race.

‘I won’t forget it. I got a pretty good start. I was there at 20 metres and that was it.’
