ALEX FERGUSON apologised to Manchester United fans after Crystal Palace dumped them out of the Carling Cup.

Fergie said: "I don't know where to start with that. That was not a Manchester United performance and I'm very disappointed.

"We had a lot of possession but didn't do anything with it. We tried to play too many short passes. I'd like to apologise to the fans."

Glenn Murray's extra-time header earned Palace a semi-final showdown against Championship rivals Cardiff in January.

United boss Ferguson, who fielded NINE internationals in his starting line-up, said: "I don't want to take anything away from Palace — I hope they get to the final because they have put in a mammoth effort."

Eagles manager Dougie Freedman said: "It's a wonderful night for the club. After where we have come from in the last couple of years, I'm very proud of everyone.

"But Cardiff is a really difficult tie for us — I think it's as hard as it could have been."

Darren Ambrose hit Palace's opener from 35 yards. Former United star Gary Neville said:

"It was one of the best goals I have ever seen at Old Trafford."
