A MOTHER and her six-year-old daughter have been killed by an elephant while moving home, Mashonaland West police said.

Elinate Siamavhu, 38, and daughter Cholletha were moving items from their old home in the northern district of Siakobvu, Mashonaland West province, when the animal charged at them.

The mother was trampled and died instantly, while her daughter was gored by the elephant and died on the way to hospital, police spokesman Clemence Mabgweazara said.

Siamavhu’s husband, responding to his family’s cries for help, raced to the scene and found his wife lying in a pool of blood, while his daughter groaned in pain nearby. The child’s intestines were protruding.

Police say the pair’s death bring to three the number of people killed by elephants this year.

In June, a guide in the resort town of Victoria Falls was killed by a lone bull elephant while walking a client back to a hotel.
