Ferdinand adaiwa kumsaliti mkewe, alishitaki gazeti

Mr Ferdinand, 32, is suing the Sunday Mirror for printing allegations about a 13-year relationship with interior designer Carly Storey in April 2010.

She met Mr Ferdinand at a party when they were both 17, and claimed they continued their affair after the footballer met his future wife Rebecca Ellison in 2000 and married her in 2009.

The footballer abruptly cut contact with Miss Storey by changing his mobile phone number days after he took up the mantle of England captain from his alleged love rat teammate John Terry in February last year, she claimed.

Ferdinand is seeking damages following an article published in the Sunday Mirror last year which alleged he had an affair with a childhood friend, Carly Storey

Miss Storey was paid £16,000 by the Sunday Mirror for the interview after she approached publicist Max Clifford.

Lawyers representing Mr Ferdinand claim the article was a ‘cynical’ breach of his privacy.

They said the newspaper was ‘trading’ in his confidential information and he is now owed ‘substantial’ damages for misuse of private information.

In a statement presented to the judge, the footballer said some of Miss Storey’ s claims were ‘false and invented’.

They led to him being taunted in the street by people shouting ‘Where’s your new bird?’, he said.

He added: ‘It has been stressful and embarrassing for me to have to explain to fellow professionals as well as family members and friends and it has inevitably put a strain on my relationship with my wife.

‘The article made it out like it was referring to events that only happened yesterday, but in fact I had not met this girl for six years by the time it was published.

‘It was stressful and very uncomfortable for me to have to do things like collect my kids from school , knowing that other parents there may have read the article and not realised that it was essentially a very old story.’

During a 90-minute cross-examination, Gavin Millar QC, for Mirror Group Newspapers Ltd, said Mr Ferdinand had spoken about his family life in positive terms and was now attempting to suppress bad publicity.

Mr Ferdinand - who’s sex video happened during a holiday in Cyprus with fellow footballers Frank Lampard and Kieron Dyer – said in his statement that he ‘never claimed to be a role model on issues of morality or sexual conduct’.

But Mr Millar said: ‘You don’t have to be Mary Whitehouse, you don’t have to set yourself up as a guide of moral conscience. If you are misleading the public by your statements, the papers have a right to correct that impression.’

Mr Ferdinand has previously been accused of a five-year affair with Virgin Airways hostess Lauren Alcom, 29, and a long-running relationship with former Page 3 girl and Footballers’ Wives actress Holly McGuire. He did not sue newspapers over the allegations.

Mr Millar said the footballer seemed happy to talk about his children, and once described himself as ‘seriously vying for number one dad position’.

Yesterday Mr Ferdinand, reiterated that he considers himself to be a role model and a ‘good dad’.

But Mr Millar said it was part of a carefully constructed image that he avoided mentioning his affairs in a series of promotional interviews for business projects including the online magazine #5, a range of shoes and a restaurant in Manchester.

Neither did he broach the issue with his one million Twitter fans, Mr Millar said, while ‘aspects of his life were airbrushed out’ of his 2006 autobiography Rio: My Life.

An irritated Mr Ferdinand said: ‘Does that mean I don’t go shopping, I don’t do anything else, just because I don’t mention it? That’s one thing I like doing… being a father. That’s why I have highlighted it.’

Mr Ferdinand, who lives in a £2.5million house in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, was brought up on a sink estate in South London and rose to be crowned England captain in February last year.

He took over the role from John Terry, who had been stripped of the title followed an alleged affair with Vanessa Perroncel, girlfriend of his teammate Wayne Bridge.

At the time, England manager Fabio Capello said that captains should set an example to ‘children and the fans’.

The new promotion for Mr Ferdinand provoked debate, because of his previous sex scandals and an infamous missed drugs test in 2003, which led to an eight-month ban.

The footballer said yesterday that the manager also warned him privately: ‘Be professional. You have seen what happened to John Terry.’

But Ferdinand claimed in court that this was a reference to affairs ‘with a teammate’s missus’, not general infidelities.
