A central South African university, known for fraught race relations, awarded an honorary education doctorate to Oprah Winfrey yesterday.

The 57-year-old chat show host cried as she listened to a speech about the progress of race relations in the country before accepting her award from the University of Bloemfontein.

Wearing an bright red and blue traditional graduation cap and gown, Oprah sat in the audience and listened throughout the ceremony which was arranges specifically to honour the American star.
