Thief caught with 49 phones down his trousers

A wily criminal has been arrested with a haul of 49 mobile phones stuffed down his trousers, Swiss police have said.

A 27-year-old Romanian, believed to be either the actual thief or a receiver of the stolen goods, was arrested over the weekend in Zurich.

In order to transport the haul, he had come up with the ingenious of putting on two pairs of trousers with the ankle-seams sewn together.

The phones had been reported stolen from a techno party in the Swisscity.

The crime is similar to that of another hapless thief who stuffed 20 mobiles down his trousers only to be caught when police heard one of the stolen devices ringing from underneath his clothes.

Ionut Guita decided to use tights rather than a second pair of trousers to stash the phones after snatching them from revellers at the Sundown music festival near Norwich.

Police, who were contacted by the 16-year-old, then tracked the phone to the thief's trousers, where they heard it ringing.

Guita, from Stratford, east London, pleaded guilty to 20 counts of thefts last year and was sentenced to 30 months in prison.
