A fourth year female student
in one of the city’s public university got more than she bargained for when she
received a suspension of 1,000 academic days for sexually harassing a lecturer.
Mary (not her real name), who
was pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, is said to have sneaked into
the senior lecturer’s office at around 6.30pm to negotiate for marks after
receiving a supplementary.
However, she was in for a rude shock when the
lecturer called the campus security and reported that the student, who was
dressed for the occasion in a micro-miniskirt, was behaving in a sexually
suggestive way.
The incident created a commotion in the campus
after male students, who got wind of the story, threatened to strip her naked.
The
lecturer’s complaint later reached the university senate, where Mary denied the
allegations.
However,
she was found to have behaved inappropriately and suspended as an example to
other female students. Interestingly, it is said that cases of sexual
harassment by male lectures have been on the raise at the university. But it
appears this time the hunter had become the hunted.
