Serena Williams akiona cha moto

Sloane Stephens
Sloane Stephens celebrates after beating Serena Williams in their Australian Open quarter final.

SERENA Williams badly hurt her back and destroyed her racquet in frustration as the unbackable favourite crashed out of the Australian Open today.

First it was the ankle, but today it was her back that let her down as fellow American Sloane Stephens took advantage to win a dramatic three-setter on Rod Laver Arena.

Williams was a set and break up before hurting her back while lunging forward to the net for a ball and pulling up.

Williams took her second injury time out of the tournament and could barely move when she returned, losing the second set.

The superstar lost all the power out of her lethal serve, but fought back in the third set and failed to surrender.

But the 19-year-old Stephens was equal to the task, closing the match 3-6 7-5 6-4 in 2 hours and 17 minutes.

It was easily the biggest win of Stephens' career.

The young American grew up idolising Williams and her face was one of pure shock when Williams put it into the net on match point.

The giddy teenager could not help but take a sneak peak of her mobile phone as she packed her tennis bag.

She later told ESPN she had received 145 text messages in five minutes.

Stephens will meet world No.1 Victoria Azarenka in the semi-finals.
