Wenger: Messi is mesmerizing

Barcelona's star forward Lionel Messi has beaten a 40-year-old record after scoring his 86th goal in a year in a Real Betis match at the weekend.
Messi set a record of 86 goals scored in a calendar year when he netted his second of the night in a La Liga game at Real Betis on Sunday, beating Gerd Müller's record of 85 goals in 1972.

The 25-year-old World Player of the Year award winner earlier equalled the record when he picked up the ball in a central position in the 16th minute and left the Betis defence standing, before sending an angled shot across goal into the bottom right corner.

Andrés Iniesta's clever back-heel set the Argentine up to score again nine minutes later with a sweeping shot that flew into the same corner of the goal.

Favourite to secure a fourth straight World Player of the Year award when the winner is announced next month, Messi has netted 74 times for Barca and 12 for Argentina in 2012 – beating Mueller's total for Bayern Munich and Germany in 1972.

Arsene Wenger has described Barcelona's Lionel Messi as "mesmerizing".
The Argentine set a new record with his 85th and 86th goals of the calendar year, overtaking the previous mark of 85 set by Gerd Muller back in 1972, and the French coach has sent his compliments to the 25-year-old.

“Congratulations to Messi. He is just mesmerizing. What he is doing is unbelievable," he told the Arsenal website.

Nahodha wa Barcelona, Carles Puyol( kulia), akimpongeza Lionel Messi kushoto baada ya kufunga bao dhidi ya Real Betis. Katikati ni kiungo Andres Iniesta wa klabu hiyo. Barcelona ilishinda 2-1.
"Even with the biggest imagination, I would not have thought somebody would be capable of doing that.

"He makes it look so easy to score, and we are all tempted to say ‘let us walk on this pitch and score goals’, because it looks so easy when he does it. When you have played football, you know how difficult it is to score one goal.

“To think that one player can score 86 per year, if you think you play nine and a half months, it’s nearly 10 goals guaranteed per month. When you start the month, you know this boy will give you 10 goals, that is not bad!”

Messi may extend his record even further before the turn of the year, with the Blaugrana scheduled to play four more times before the start of 2013.
