ALEX FERGUSON suffered his "worst-ever day" as Roberto Mancini's Manchester City set off rockets at Old Trafford yesterday.
Fergie's noisy neighbours hit the champions for six, with two-goal Mario Balotelli igniting the bonfire.
Just 36 hours earlier, the fiery Italian had to flee his blazing Manchester home after a firework prank went wrong.
But that did not stop Balotelli lighting the touchpaper on United's worst defeat for 81 years.
Fergie said: "It was our worst-ever day. It's the worst result in my history, ever.
"Even as a player I don't think I ever lost 6-1. I can't believe the scoreline.
"I'm shattered, I can't believe it. It was an incredible disappointment.
"There's a lot of embarrassment in that dressing room — and quite rightly so."
Ferguson said his team lacked common sense as they conceded three goals from the 90th minute.
He said: "We just kept attacking. They were attacking three versus two.
"At times it was two v three at the back and that was suicidal, crazy.
"I thought with the experience we've got — Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra — they would... but we just kept attacking. Sometimes there has to be common sense about it.
"We kept attacking when we went 4-1 down and we should have just said 'We've had our day.'
"It was a bad day."
United were 1-0 down a minute after the break when they had Jonny Evans sent off for tugging back Balotelli as he battled his way through.
Ferguson added: "The sending off was a killer for us."
The defeat ended United's club record run of 19 straight league victories at home.
