BALI police have arrested a local man over the attempted rape of a nine-year-old Australian girl who was holidaying with her family.
The man, who worked as a driver at the villa near Ubud Bali where
the girl and her parent were staying, was arrested on Sunday following
the attack.
Police allege the man entered the girl's room, finding her asleep, before taking to the garden and removing her clothing.
Local
officials said the girl began screaming for help after waking up, with
the suspect panicking and fleeing to his room where security from the
complex found him pretending to be asleep.
The 33-year-old man's clothing, as well as the young girl's pyjamas, have been seized for forensic testing.
He is being held in police custody while investigations continue.
Australian authorities told AAP Indonesian police are investigating the alleged sexual assault.
"Australian consular officials are providing assistance to the girl's family," the Foreign Affairs Department said.
"We understand a suspect has been arrested."
