At least 200 South Sudanese refugees were reported to have drowned in the White Nile yesterday when their barge sank as they fled renewed fighting between rebel and government forces in the capital of the oil-rich Upper Nile state.
The civilians, including women and children, had crowded on to the aging
vessel in an attempt to escape across the river amid a rebel assault on the
town of Malakal, according to reports.
In the ensuing disaster, between 200 and 300 were killed.
"The boat was overloaded," Col Philip Aguer, a spokesman for the South Sudanese army, said.
