Rescuers found the wreckage of two missing Ugandan helicopters near Mount Kenya on Tuesday (August 14th), with two Ugandan servicemen dead and at least five surviving, AFP reported.
"The good news is that we have managed to find five survivors and
they have just been airlifted to safety," said Simon Gitau, a senior
warden with the Kenya Wildlife Service, which is involved in the rescue
operation.
"They are in good condition after walking away from the crash
site."
Kenyan Chief of the Defence Forces General Julius Karangi told
reporters that one of the two helicopters "had been found burnt
completely, and the other one hanging somewhere on the cliff".
Seven
people are still unaccounted for.
Four helicopters left Uganda on Sunday for the Somali port city of
Kismayo to support African Union Mission in Somalia military operations
against al-Shabaab.
One of the two other helicopters arrived in Garissa for scheduled
re-fuelling, and the other made an emergency landing in Mount Kenya and
radioed for help. Its seven crewmembers are safe and has been evacuated.
