THE fiancée of stricken footballer Fabrice Muamba begged fans to pray for him last night as his life hung in the balance.

And despite prompt medical attention after he collapsed on the pitch, Muamba is understood to have had no heartbeat at all for around seven minutes. It raised fears he may have brain damage due to oxygen starvation to the brain.

It also emerged that Muamba's life may have been saved by a football fan heart specialist who was at the game.
Dr Andrew Deaner ran on to the pitch and began treating the player. Muamba was then rushed to the London Chest Hospital where Dr Deaner is a consultant cardiologist.
His fiancée Shauna, mum of his three-year-old son Joshua, kept a vigil at his bedside with his parents Marcel and Gertrude.

In a statement, the hospital and football club said: "Fabrice remains in a critical condition in intensive care in the Heart Attack Centre."

Spurs striker Jermain Defoe — who was among players weeping after Congo-born Muamba collapsed in front of them — visited his childhood friend in the East London hospital yesterday.
