THE British medical community was in shock today following the death of a top surgeon who killed himself after making a minor mistake in the operating theatre.

Alexander Reading, 45, was found hanging from the rafters in the garage of his property at Grafton Flyford, Worcestershire, the Worcester News said.

The married father-of-two had been upset over a surgery he performed that left a patient in a worse condition, according to The (London) Daily Telegraph.

"There are some strong rumours circulating that Alex was plagued with guilt over a patient's care," a colleague said.

"Apparently he felt responsible for a mistake during an operation which left the patient in a very poorly state."

Dr Reading, a keen sports fan who coached a boys' soccer team in his spare time, worked at the Spire South Bank hospital in Worcester and the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch, 37km away.

A neighbour said on the condition of anonymity that there was no suggestion Dr Reading was in trouble for the error but "he apparently felt responsible and clearly couldn't live with what he'd done."

The actual mistake and the condition of the patient was not immediately clear.

Dr Reading - an orthopedic and trauma surgeon who led pioneering research to improve hip replacement operations - was regarded as one of Britain's top doctors.
