Rooney provided the delivery for van Persie's 27th-minute goal, which beat his former club 1-0 and saw champions United close to within five points of the Premier League leaders.

After claiming his biggest win since taking over at Old Trafford, Moyes paid tribute to dynamic duo van Persie and Rooney for the victory which has put United firmly back in the title race.

"Great players score great goals in big games and Robin is a great player," said the Scot.

"I have to say his sidekick, Wayne, played great as well. The two of them were fantastic. Wayne made it, Robin scored it.

 "I said to Wayne afterwards that his energy and the way he worked was magnificent.

"It was a big game to win because Arsenal have been in such great form. We showed how important it was by how well we played in the first half.

Man of the match Rooney said: "We knew we had to win at all costs. That was the toughest we've been to break down all season and we defended really well.
 Hard to beat: Phil Jones was a key man for Manchester United
"We knew we couldn't afford to lose and we couldn't let Arsenal get 11 points away from us. The other results also gave us a boost and we're right back in it now.

"It's a massive lift, a great weekend for us ahead of the international break. Our aim is to be top or thereabouts at the New Year.
