An Egyptian couple have been caught trying to smuggle a baby into the United Arab Emirates in their hand luggage.
The five-month-old infant was discovered by security teams at Sharjah Airport
during routine arrival screenings when the bag passed through an X-ray
machine, according to local newspaper reports.
Officials were astonished to see the outline of the child's body on their
monitors and alerted police, who arrested the couple and charged them with
endangering the baby’s life.
“When customs officials saw the baby inside the bag at the X-ray scanner, they
were stunned,” a Sharjah Police official said.
“This machine is very dangerous for anyone, let alone a baby in a bag to pass
through.
“A case will now be raised against the mother and father, they both have visas
to come to the UAE, but they have put the life of their child at risk.”
Another official added: "They were risking the life of the baby
"They said in an interrogation they'd resorted to sneaking him through
inside a bag because he did not have a passport or visa and they wanted to
have him with them in the UAE."
The couple are said to have been living in the UAE illegally previously but
had decided to return home to Egypt so the mother could give birth in their
home country.
The trio were said to have been held at airport immigration on Friday after
staff found the child had no travel documents. However, during a shift
change the family had sneaked out of the area, stowing the baby in the bag.
It was unclear how the infant had originally been allowed onto the plane.
