Interest in erotic romance, or "mummy porn" as it has been dubbed, is growing uncontrollably in South Africa.
The
trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades
Freed, by English mother of two Erika Mitchell, 49, has been dominating
book sales.
This week, the books were at number one, two and four
on Exclusive Books' bestseller list. Former Springbok coach Peter de
Villiers' Politically Incorrect was in third place.
Lyn Riesnik,
of local distributors Random House Struik, said: "We have sold 30 000 of
the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy to book stores since mid-April.
"These books are gathering momentum and we cannot keep up with the [demand] - as stock comes in, it goes out".
Adult
fiction is regarded as a bestseller in South Africa if it sells more
than 5000 copies, according to Penguin Books, publishers of the local
Spudnovels.
About 500 000 copies of the three Spud books have been sold.
Ten
million copies of the Fifty Shades trilogy have been sold around the
world and the books are topping bestseller lists on both sides of the
Atlantic.
Sales of the first instalment this week outstripped those of the Harry Potter series in the UK.
Fifty Shades of Grey is, according to the Daily Mail, the fastest-selling paperback yet, beating even The Da Vinci Code.
Mitchell,
who wrote the trilogy under the pen name EL James, describes her books
as "romantic fantasy" stories that offer women a "holiday from their
husbands".
They tell of a submissive-dominant relationship between
a sexually inexperienced female university student and a successful
businessman.
Graphic descriptions of their sexual exploits, including whipping, are scattered through the first book.
On
Tuesday, local author Margie Orford tweeted her opinion of the latest
publishing phenomenon:
"a virgin + a billionaire + millions of
frustrated book club ladies with boring husbands and credit cards = 50
SHADES OF GREY SUPER SALES".
British writer Amy Dawson says:
"Whatever it is that so many readers find so titillating about EL
James's rompathon, it's certainly not the quality of her prose."
