And boss Alex Ferguson believes Roo's goal streak has got Manchester United in the title-winning business again.
The England striker took his tally to nine in six games after getting both goals in the 2-0 win over West Brom that put the Red Devils top.
And Fergie believes if the hotshot continues at that rate to the end of the season, a 20th title will be on the way to Old Trafford.
Ferguson said: "If Wayne gets to 40 goals I will be absolutely delighted because we will be in business then!
"He is on a hot streak which is what he does."
Rooney sprinted on to Javier Hernandez's shot to poke it past Ben Foster for his first on 35 minutes, then scored a 71st-minute penalty.
Ferguson added: "His first goal was fantastic.
"I thought at first he may have been offside because he was so clear. But when you see his timing of the run it was fantastic. It was a really good finish."
United are top of the table for the first time since October 15 — a point clear of neighbours City, who lost 1-0 at Swansea. Ferguson said: "That was a bonus. I didn't expect that.
WELL DONE SON ... Alex Ferguson applauds his side after beating West Brom"I'm happy to be there because only a few weeks ago we were seven points behind.

"Now we are one point ahead so we have turned around eight points.
"Credit to the players and the resilience of the squad because everyone knows we have had a lot of injuries.
"At this time of the season, points will be dropped and you have to make sure you just don't drop as many as your opponents."
