Bolt's first appearance in Rome drew 47,000 to Rome's Olympic Stadium, the largest crowd for more than 20 years, and the shock he gave them was not one of awe.
He looked like a man finding sprinting hard work.
'The nerves got to me,' said Bolt. 'In fact, it was a totally bad race and I'm just pleased I won.'
Powell was frustrated at missing his chance. 'I lost my focus and so he could beat me,' he said.
